Apple Lane’s Prince Albert

An excellent old culinary  apple, discovered in 1841 and named for the Prince Consort, Malus domestica Lane’s Prince Albert is a very ‘good do-er’, thriving on almost any soil, and a good choice for novice growers. The fruit is smaller than that of some cooking apples, slightly irregular in shape, and green with an orange-red flush; the juicy flesh has an excellent, sharp flavour, cooking down to a brisk, lemon-yellow purée.  It is a compact tree, and a heavy and very reliable cropper. As a compact spur-bearer, it is easily trained; as an espalier, it looks lovely in flower and when fruiting. The pale pink blossom is good for bees and moths, the latter attracting bats into the garden. Particularly resistant to scab and canker, apple Lane’s Prince Albert holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
