Ornamental Pear Chanticleer
A cultivar of the far-eastern Callery pear, Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer is a narrowly conical, columnar, medium-sized tree with an architectural quality, especially if limbed up. Masses of creamy-white blossom in spring are followed by small brown fruits. The glossy dark green leaves reliably turn yellow, orange and red in autumn. As one of the earliest trees to come into leaf and losing them very late, it makes an excellent screen if planted in a row. A fast-growing tree, its branches can be susceptible to storm damage, so it’s best planted in a sheltered position.
